Project 5: Weeds vs. Us
I love having my hands in the dirt. It is never a science and always an art. There are no rules. And if it comes down to me versus that weed I’m trying to pull out of the ground that doesn’t want to come out? I know I’ll win. — Matthew McConaughey
Unlike Matthew McConaughey, I’m not a big fan of “having my hands in the dirt.” But when the weed count at one’s new home can fill THREE 30-gallon lawn bags, it doesn’t matter if one is a fan of the process or not. It must be dealt with.
As a result, for about 7 hours on Sunday in lovely 70-degree weather, we pulled, cut down, uprooted, and sprayed Round-up on weeds and more weeds. We also transplanted three plants that were being choked by the massive amount of ground cover near the front door. (As our thumbs aren’t green, keep your fingers crossed that the poor little dears will make it.)
After this, we spread 6 bags of brown mulch over the flowerbed and tried to straighten some plants that were pushed around and nearly flattened by all the weeds.
The good news: it looks much cleaner. The bad news: this is only one side of the house. We’ve three more to go—which means Mr. McConaughey might soon be receiving a call…
PS. We’ve also attached a picture of the backyard. With the exception of a couple of spots, the sod, which we planted two weeks ago, is growing nicely. This is the first time it has been cut.
